Booster’s Graduate Programme

We’re on the lookout some dynamic, business and software grads for Booster’s Graduate Recruitment programme 2022-2023!

But instead of us telling you (or someone you know!) why you should come join us at Booster, get the lowdown from last year’s Booster grad, Adam Payne, who now works as a Research Analyst in Booster’s Portfolio Management Team.

What made you want to apply for the Booster Graduate Programme?

There were many reasons, but, firstly, I saw it as an opportunity to develop my understanding of how a financial institution and the financial industry operated. With no real experience in the industry or any real idea what sort of career paths there were when I came out of uni, it was nice to gain some exposure before committing to any long-term position.

What have you gained from the Graduate Programme?

Over my time as a graduate, I got to work across nine or 10 different teams. This not only helped me forge friendships across the business but also taught me valuable lessons about how to work with different people and in different team environments.

It also helped steer my career on a path that I was able to choose. Coming out of the graduate role, I was lucky enough to be offered a position as a Research Analyst in our Portfolio Management Team, with a focus on fixed interest investments. Now in that position, I help to manage around $1.5 billion of fixed interest investments which have a real-life impact on New Zealanders. Putting it in that perspective makes it all feel very real and I get a bit of a thrill out of that.

And how have you found the Booster culture?

The culture has been something I’ve loved about Booster since I first stepped foot in the office. It feels like a big business but with small business vibes. We have lunch shouted for us on Mondays from local businesses, regular team building and social events, volunteer opportunities, free beers on Friday, birthday morning teas, and the team are based in one, open plan office in Wellington.

While all these perks help make work enjoyable on a day-to-day basis, it’s clear to see the culture runs much deeper than that. Working across all the different teams I could see that everyone that works here is personally invested in doing the right thing for our members and New Zealand as a whole. As a New Zealand-owned and operated company that manages the savings of over 100,000 Kiwis, there is a real sense of responsibility, which everyone takes very seriously.

Why would you recommend others to apply for the Graduate Programme?

I think my last three answers have really summed up why I would recommend others to apply. The culture is fantastic, it’s an awesome opportunity to gain exposure to the industry, and even if you’re not a finance graduate, it can provide great base of skills to build from.

If you think you have the right skills and would fit in alongside the Booster crew (or know someone who might!), check out NZUni Talent’s university career page.

Applications close on Friday, 9 September 2023.
